Elorrio throughout history
Elorrio was founded in 1356 on lands belonging to the San Agustín de Etxebarria elizate. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the town enjoyed a golden era.
Many families began trading with America, generating much wealth in the town, as evident in the many stately homes, coats of arms and the Purísima Concepción Basilica, the largest of its kind in Bizkaia.

Elorrio has a rich historic-artistic heritage, with many stately homes, coats of arms, fountains and calvaries adorning many of its ancient streets. It is the municipality with the largest number of coats of arms in Bizkaia (69 in all).
Calvaries
Another thing Elorrio is known for is its cavalries. Its collection of crosses is the most diverse in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country and one of the oldest in Europe. There are nine calvaries in Elorrio, with Kurutziaga Calvary being the most beautiful and complete.

Argiñeta Cemetery
Argiñeta Cemetery is one of the most important funerary monuments in the Basque Country, due to both the number and the age of the sarcophagi contained in it, which date from the 7th-9th centuries, right up to the Middle Ages.
The sarcophagi were originally built to be used in the cemeteries of different local neighbourhoods, although they were regrouped in their current location during the 19th century by the then parish priest, Father Retolaza.
